Treasure From Antiquity

by fm wright

From the items stored in the attic,
it was certainly quite pragmatic,
that the occupant had been as report,
a doctor of the archaeological sort.

Though the time I had known him was brief,
his loss filled me with exceeding grief.
As I continued looking I did find
a private catalog that nearly blew my mind.

Within in its pages contained a key
with a note addressed solely to me.
It was coded so only I could read.
Please keep the findings hidden the message did plead.

I was guided to a metal box,
secured by a chain and a padlock.
I inserted the key into the hole,
and after some jiggling of it, obtained my goal.

When I looked inside I got a surprise.
I wasn't sure I could even believe my eyes.
It was certainly not meant for display;
though in it a mummy in full repose, did lay.

It seemed like a strange thing to request;
still I would attempt to do my best,
to ensure the press got no wind of it,
to keep the mummy under wraps, I'd do my my bit.

Attics, Boxes, and Trunks contest entry

This is based on a true finding, though the story line itself is purely made up. A real mummy was found in someone's attic. It was in the news some time back.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
