One Little Flame

The candleflame

reaches out

and flickers as I pass,

casting strange shadows

on the wall behind me.

The tall mirror reflects

the taper beside my chair,

a taper struggling to live,

grasping

the small wick within

as if that could sustain

it forever.

Too soon,

opaque drops

of beeswax

are all that’s left to show

where it once stood.
