Until my dying day...

Josephine

by Diana L Crawford

"Josephine, oh Josephine,
why do you lament so?
Dressed all in black as you pass by,
your stunning beauty sadly veiled."

My lover took to leaving me
while I was fast asleep.
He stole away into the night,
upon a merchant ship he sailed.

He said he loved me deeper than
the briny open sea;
the sparkle in my emerald eyes
he could not live without.

He said he’d love me for all time
and vowed he’d never leave;
the scent of jasmine in my hair
left him no earthly doubt.

A year has passed me by and not
a single word from him.
I fear that he’s now lost to me
and loves another far away.

So I have donned my mourning weeds
and weep beneath my veil
for I have pledged my love to him
until my breathless dying day.
