The death of a pet, family member is never easy.

Her name was Rusty-girl

by HarryT

Her name was Rusty-girl, a tawny Airedale
A true member of our family, slept with
Played with, and protected the children.

She loved to run, chase her ball
In winter she pulled the kids
On a sled round the backyard

She was a big dog, our Rusty-girl
But, she loved to cuddle, we believed
She was confused, thought she was a lap dog

If one of the family, sat in a comfortable
Chair, she would nuzzle an arm
Hoping to be invited onto one’s lap
She was a good dog and much loved

A great injustice in this world is that
Dogs live relatively short lives
Our hearts were broken and tears flowed
When our Rusty-girl had to be put to sleep

But yet today, twenty years from that date
Our children remember and still speak of
Their loving dog, our forever, Rusty-girl
