He Created a New Star I believe

Only One Star

by Gail Denham

Mom watched that one star every night, drawing aside the curtain in her tiny apartment bedroom. Maybe she wished on it. She might have named it. I know it drew her like a magnet before she lay her head on the pillow beside the radio, tuned to talk shows. These talk show conversations eased her to sleep each night, taking her thoughts to the dilemmas of others and away from her tired wonderings.

I see that star today, long years away from Mom's vigil. I see it from my kitchen window where it shows above my orchid plants.

I've named the star Harold. Seems a likely name for that bright star. For all I know it could have been the one that shone over the Christ Child's straw-lined manger bed.

I wonder too if Harold was created just for this purpose. Sent by God the Father to show the world how important this newborn was to our small planet.

We are small indeed . When you gaze through the high powered telescopes at the planetarium and view the vast universe, it wonders me why the Great God even bothered with us, let alone created a special star to alert the sages from the east that something had just gone down -- an important event in history, over there in Bethlehem.

Perhaps angels helped design that star. "Make it bigger, Lord. Let it sprinkle stardust on the whole world every night. Just like the manna in the wilderness.

It could rain down star sparkles. Little kids would wake up early, race out to fill baskets with that bright dust. Perhaps they'd keep some in a bottle and at night the bottle would glow, light up their bedroom."

But God chose just that one star, a little brighter, yes -- a new star in the heavens.

The wise men noticed, just like Mom noticed Harold every night before she slept.

It was bright. It was comforting. Perhaps it made her think of God's love when He created that new star to announce His Son. Could be she thought about the heaven where she now lives, up there above Harold.
