Neva River Paradise

by Joan E.

Saint Petersburg holds
forty-two splendid islands
harmonious views

glowing Hermitage
on the broad Neva River
home to world-class art

Leonardo and Renoir
precious artifacts

Isaac's Cathedral's
countless mosaics transfix
 gleams as museum

lapis lazuli
and tall malachite columns
lavish inner walls

Church of Sacred Blood
with colorful and gold domes
governs side canal

This series of travel poem-cards is a salute to St. Petersburg, one of the highlights of my recent Baltic cruise. The Church of Sacred Blood was built as a memorial to the assassination of Alexander 2 by his son in 1801 and not for religious services. It has 7,000 mosaics on its outside, which captivate. FanArtist supergold's artwork captures the masterpiece.
