War museums & memorials exist for a reason... it's not glory

To Never Forget, To Never Relive

by Y. M. Roger

Within these walls, there is a sense
of youthful dreams unrealized,
of lives invaded by a war,
of fam’ly hopes now vaporized…

Within these walls, though silence reigns,
visions echo ‘round combat scenes,
voiceless shouts on stubborn lips,
time-muted snarls of brave Marines…

Within these walls, as light directs
astute the eye, beloved keepsakes:
Saint Chris for passage, notes from home,
things that, in life, none would forsake…

Within these walls, cold weapons lie,
were blooded by innocent hands –
their nightmares forged for duty’s flag,
lines blurred between faith and command.

Because of what’s within these walls,
may generations e’er recall
great loss of life and sacrifice
preserved the peace outside these walls…

Of all the museums I brought my boys to over the years, the war museums (of all different wars...I did have three boys, you know!!) made the greatest impact on them. There were a number of those military and/or history museums in which my energetic and very active boys walked and whispered and were amazingly calm and almost reverent... all without direction from me. They still recall these museums better than any of the others (and believe me, there were A LOT!) -- and they understand the devastation and more associated with it. :)

"Children will not avoid that which they do not know all the consequences of..."

Thank you for reading me. :)
