I Thought I Knew

by Mike Stevens

Should be a pic of rusted gears:

I thought I knew society, what did I know?
I thought I'd seen it all, how things were going to go.

I thought no way in hell we'd be taken for a ride.
By empty promises and emptier egoistical lies.

I thought no matter what we'd always right the ship,
But we're taken in by a living Freudian slip.

Some blissfully fiddle while a monster plies his trade,
Jangling keys with one hand, while the other holds a blade

That's eviscerating the pillars of democracy and our souls,
And leaves us to bleed, stunned, and stabbed full of holes.

At the mercy of his storm, a hurricane of ego's will.
We The People reduced to just more grist for his mill.

One day we'll wake to find empty is all there is to see,
Rusted metal gears where our piece of mind used to be.
