If I Had Wings

by June Sargent

I wish I were a dragonfly
with iridescent wings of blue,
or, maybe a bright red butterfly.

Among the lily pads I'd spy
on bullfrogs croaking right on cue.
I wish I were a dragonfly.

I'd fly up to the sky so high
to chase a bumblebee or two,
or, maybe a bright red butterfly.

To catch me you can surely try,
but shiny wings distort your view.
I wish I were a dragonfly.

When sun goes down I'll wave goodbye.
but I'll return and look for you.
or, maybe a bright red butterfly.

At daybreak I will not be shy.
My zig zag dance will catch your eye.
I wish I were a dragonfly,
or, maybe a bright red butterfly.
