What Shoes Will I Wear Today?

by LisaMay

What shoes will I wear today?
With them I am shod to walk this mortal sod.
Do I dress for work or play, on this unfolding day?

Will I stay warm in my fluffy socks,
when in gumboots I’m stomping in mud?
Or feel the chill of concrete blocks,
as I’m skidding in slaughterhouse blood?

I’ll hide my feet of clay in slippers all day,
but I might have to hike across rocks,
so I’ll need strong boots for that task.

But now here’s a question to ask:
Will my high heels hold more appeal
when I saunter the Mall or flirt at a ball?
Or should I wear my ballet pumps
to pirouette and do fancy jumps?

Perhaps I should keep my feet bare,
I did it in my youth,
although folks would probably stare:
some don’t like the naked truth.

I thank God I have feet to go places,
and hands to tie my shoelaces;
with choices of what I can wear
and also shoes to spare.

This one’s worn, with a shredded sole.
So I tell myself as I walk the way:
just retain the ones that are whole.
Can I keep my shoes every day
in a clean and wholesome state?
My life is so mired – can you relate?

On a bright and shiny new day
I should polish my shoes to reflect
the problems I wish to reject.
So I try in my own small way
to fit some new shoes to your feet
so you can skip to a joyous beat.

I’m nice like that.
Now, how about that awful hat!

Footwear writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a POEM in any style and to any length with the theme of FOOTWEAR.
Will you write about tennis shoes? hiking boots? stiletto heels? slippers?

Author's Note:
The photo is of my own hiking boots when they were new. They are much more scuffed these days from clambering over rocks while going to interesting places. The boots always let water in, even though it says on the label they are waterproof. New boots always have a big hole in each one. You know why? It's at the top - it's how you get your foot in!
