Old gym shoes still want to play

Forgotten Playmates

by HarryT

Hey jock-guy, look down here. Remember us?
Down here buried in the corner of your closet
We know, we’re just a pair of old, smelly sneakers
Barely held together by tattered, stained shoelaces

With gray sweat webs, born of challenges past
Our silver eyelets are rusting and pitting
Our soles worn smooth from screeching on the floor
But jock-guy, why can’t we play just one more?

Remember our scars are from our winning ways
Born from your hustling, zone busting plays
We know we look shabby and might even droop
But, remember how we’d help you fly to the hoop?

Come on, put us on, pull our laces up tight
Let us brace your ankles for one more night
The locker room tang, the feel of the court
Cutting sharp, we promise sturdy support

Hey jock-guy, come on, slip us on,
Lace us up, let’s play, just one more.
