A dying old cowboy story.

The Last Visit

by Willie P. Smith

Two old hats hung on hooks by his head.
Worn out boots were toed under his bed.
"Come on in," He said with a grin.
"By golly. It's good to see you again.

When wus it you say we met?
Sometimes I remember, but most times I ferget.
I'm a very old cowboy you know,
I used to work in a wild west show.

I rode broncos and bulls when I wus young,
But as you can see, my song's 'bout sung,
I've been blessed, you'll have to agree.
I've known many cowboys who've had far less than me.

I mailed many a letter with a two-cent stamp,
And read some good books by a coal-oil lamp.
I've owned a couple of good horses and one new saddle
I wore 'em all out working another man's cattle.

I wus married once and once wus plenty.
I wus way too young, somewhere around twenty.
Oh! I've had lots of wimmen but they didn't work out,
I wus too restless and ornery no doubt.

I've had some good friends but they're gone now,
I outlived them all somehow.
I really don't remember how old I am.
At this point, who gives a damn?

Docs say I've got only a short time to live,
That's ok, I've got nothing else to give.
Good to see you, son," He said with a grin.
"If I'm still around. Come visit again.

I'm a little tired, feel I've walked a good mile,
I'm gonna close my eyes now and rest fer awhile."
The old cowboy died while I was still there
He's gone now and I know where.
