A Villanelle for Potlatch Poetry

A Woodland Rite

by damommy

‘Twas very still that eerie night
I first saw fairies dance.
The wind was calm, the moonlight bright.

The figures cloaked in curious light,
by merest chance I watched them prance.
‘Twas very still that eerie night,

and I did give some thought to flight,
my presence here was happenstance.
The wind was calm, the moonlight bright.

I tried to move with all my might,
but stood there frozen, in a trance.
‘Twas very still that eerie night,

it made me mindful of my plight,
a most peculiar circumstance.
The wind was calm, the moonlight bright,

while I had watched this woodland rite,
and not one sprite gave me a glance.
‘Twas very still that eerie night.
The wind was calm, the moonlight bright.

A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa.
The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines). One of the most famous Villanelle is "Do not go Gentle into that Good Night" by Dylan Thomas.
