Transparent Friends

by Jesse James Doty

Lisa has 360 'friends'
who 'like' her on Facebook.
Not one of them knows the fear
and desperation Lisa feels,
knowing soon she may be homeless.

The Landlady is selling the property
where she rents, and there's no telling
when Lisa will be asked
to vacate her home when it is sold.

Superficial social sites, such as Facebook,
do not reach into a person's soul.
They barely scratch the surface
of what's really going on.
Too busy posting, nobody takes the time
to read between the lines.

Lisa feels the depth of her loneliness,
yet cheerfully posts her anecdotes
of knowing the rich and famous.
How many 'likes' she gets,
tells her that her 'friends' care.
Lost, themselves, they stay unaware.

Her transparent 'friends' don't notice
when Lisa stops posting.
There's no social media on the streets
when all your belongings are bound in sheets.
