What Did I Learn?

by A. Willow Bends

as an adult, I sought my degree
thought education would set me free
to become my higher self
to pull new ideas from the shelf
four years (while a mom!) I yearned and learned
four hours slept nightly for the B.A. I earned
worked part-time jobs to make ends meet
attended my sons' things while dead on my feet
would I do it all over, some ask
would I be up for the task?
came out and taught in public domain
full of ideas, excited,
yet forced to refrain
follow state standards, objectives and core
thirteen years later I walked out the door
gave it my all, tried my best to succeed
but admin and rules made me follow THEIR lead
some students come running and thank me
because they knew how deeply I cared
in the end, education today bought me
debt I'll be in all my life . . .
SO, I can say I haven't fared well
the great news is if I keel over
from the stress of not hanging tough/brave
the student loan debt for an old gal like me
will follow me straight to my grave
think twice before you seek higher planes
you may find yourself 'neath someone's thumb
at times I am glad for the knowledge I gained
but most often, I feel totally DUMB!

Writing Prompt
Write a poem of any type or structure that describes your views on the value of a university education.

I loved teaching and I loved students and I even loved parents who bothered to come in and complain! What I could not tolerate was a system who makes demands and knowing it is not creating betterment, continues along the same vein. Year after Year.
So, I resigned. Teachers are to be admired. They must find a way to teach to the test to be successful. I am convinced the TEST is about TESTING teachers, not students and I am feel our current educational system, where all students are being prepped to be "college ready" is just in a state of complete chaos. The times, they are a changin'! Thank you Bruceiorio for a really cool picture. This is how confusing my teaching career felt. Great photography! :)
