Gunny

The Interview Part 2

by Bill Schott

Characters:
Gunny = a retired Marine turning one hundred
Punny = a twenty-year-old reporter and columnist for the local paper
Dot = Gunny's wife

The scene continues in Gunny's living room as he answers questions for a local columnist. There are three characters on the set with two centered and seated and one upstage and standing.

Punny : So your wife died in the mid fifties.

Gunny: She was twenty.

Punny : I meant during the 1950s.

Gunny: I guess. During a war.

Punny : You never remarried?

Gunny: I guess not.

Punny : I'm sorry, Gunny. I can see you're not happy with my questions.

Gunny: She's still twenty.

Punny : Maybe we can reschedule.

Gunny: She'll always be twenty.

Punny : Thanks for your time, Gunny. I'll call.

Gunny: I call her Dot.

The columnist leaves stage left passing a woman by the window. She nods; he doesn't. She and Gunny begin speaking, but not to each other.

Dot:  He seems like a nice young man.

Gunny: Wonder what spooked the kid?

Dot: He reminds me of TJ.

Gunny: Theodore was about his age.

Dot: I'm sorry we let you down, dear.

Gunny: I miss you both.

Dot:  It just happened. We were both surprised, and then later, so unhappy.

Gunny: I wonder where that kid went?

To be continued...
