Poem For A Child Contest Entry

Where's Lily?

by LyndaS

Poem For A Child Contest Winner

Today is Lily's birthday.
She's turning six years old.
But there won't be a party.
That's what she was told.

Her grandparents showed up at noon,
along with Aunt Marie.
They went into the kitchen
so Lily wouldn't see.

She hid behind the kitchen door
and listened in disguise.
They whispered of a party
they planned as a surprise.

Her friends from school were coming,
but Lily didn't know.
They had a clown magician
for putting on a show.

Lily planned her own surprise
that she knew would be fun.
They wouldn't find the birthday girl,
she'd hide from everyone.

At six o'clock the door bell rang.
The clown and friends were there.
She slipped into the closet
to hide beneath the stairs.

Her mother brought the birthday cake.
The friends blew up balloons.
Her father gathered everyone,
"Surprise!" was coming soon.

They called up to her bedroom
and told her to come down,
where everyone was waiting,
her parents, friends and clown.

In the closet Lily smiled
because she knew for sure
that when she didn't answer them
then they would look for her.

They looked into her bedroom,
then in the basement too.
She wasn't in the attic.
They searched the whole house through.

They all asked, "Where's the birthday girl?
We've looked both up and down."
She jumped right out and yelled, "Surprise!"
She even scared the clown!
