The Awdl Sonnet

Live Well

by Dolly'sPoems

We strive to stay alive when faced with death
before our final breath leaves us a corpse.
The depth of our tenaciousness and strength
means fear of failure keeps us on our course.

I see those on the streets who have survived,
and each of them now thrive among the throng,
alive with life their struggle to revive,
the youthful inner spark that once was strong.

But age can have its own unique reward,
as foolish youth records a deathly path;
ignoring rules of man, fall to the sword
that leaves a grief-filled damning aftermath.

Live long, live well and have a tale to tell,
and never sell your soul just to rebel.

A Sonnet
Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter. Each line of the sonnet consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The rhymes scheme is a,b,a,b; c,d,c,d; e,f,e,f, gg.

The Awdl Sonnet
The same format as above but with an additional Awdl included. See below.
Awdl, in Welsh verse, is a long ode written in a complex system of alliteration and internal rhyme, the awdl was, by the 15th century, the vehicle for many outstanding Welsh poems. Assonance is acceptable for the internal rhyming, as long as the sound is maintained.

The extra rhyming complex as follows:

x x x x x a x x x b
