Out of Sight-Out of Mind

by Jesse James Doty

Patrick changed neighborhoods
because of "too many homeless"

Now safely isolated
in his home alone
Patrick is insulated
from the tragic daily lives
of those without a home

Patrick can't feel the suffering
of others less fortunate
He is secure in the belief
that the "homeless problem"
will just go away on its own

Our town officials have a similar idea
Keep forcing homeless to move
from one location to another
until they finally leave town altogether

Whether they leave or stay
there are two more to take their place
Homelessness is rapidly growing
We need to give them food and space

Patrick bristles when near
somebody he perceives as homeless
Judges them by how they appear
instead of by their character

Why, because he doesn't want
to get to know their "kind"
better for him if they're
out of sight-out of mind
