Why Do I Feel This Guilt?

by Reese Turner

Why do I feel this guilt?
I volunteered. I served!
It was an undeclared war;
Was the disrespect deserved?

Do I still feel guilty shadows
Because politicians debated
While my generation's died
In a far cause so over-rated?

Is my guilt because we lost, some
Say, or, simply did not win?
Or, that if pols promised to do it
Right, that I’d volunteer again?

My little cloud of guilt is there,
Quietly, daily, wherever I roam;
Not over what I did or did not do,
But,
because I got to come home

Memorial Day poem writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem about our soldiers, America or our flag. A patriot poem. Four stanzas,
Lines two and four must rhyme with each other in each stanza.

If I am allowed through Heaven's gates, I shall walk through with a salute to my fallen brothers and sisters who gave it all for our Beloved America. Thank you to poet Willie P. Smith for this prompt which prompted me to spend a few hours on this Memorial Day in thought and expression of my feelings. God Bless America and those who died serving her.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
