No longer wanted by once proud family

The Old Clock

by HarryT

When I came to the family
I was their pride and joy
Stood in a place of honor
In the living room where all could see

Friends who visited would ooh and ah
Complimenting my fancy golden face and
Perfectly honed, walnut cabinet
At my peak, I ticked honest and true

Springs agreeably tight
Wheels, gears and pinions exact
Hands moved with flawless precision
Chimes rang with melodic song

Time has a way of aging us all
Springs become loose
Gear teeth ground down

Even when wound tight
I have to admit I’m slower
Hands no longer precise

The family gave up on me
I want to tick the correct time
But my wheels keep slipping
I need repair, but they won’t help
Instead I’m taken to the cellar
Damp and dingy place it is

Now spiders climb and dust collects
Mechanism rusts, cabinet rots
My dulcet chimes will ring no more
