The wagon was loaded with all of their goods,
everything needed to start a new life.
With two sons and a daughter, riding in back,
the husband sat proudly, upfront with his wife.

They were headed for Kansas, where all their hopes lay,
a hundred and sixty acres of land that was free,
leaving behind friends and family this day,
clinging to dreams of the future to be.

Many miles to go before they were home,
knowing of dangers they may have to weather,
the sons, like their father, had it in them to roam,
his wife understood, love kept family together.

So many nights, camped under the moon,
rivers they forded, hard travel they faced.
Until one day, not a minute too soon,
they arrived at the spot that their home would be placed.

A cabin was built and a barn for the cow,
china knick-knacks were placed lovingly on the sill.
Though they had very little, they'd make it somehow,
with strength in their hearts and a strong iron will.

A life to be lived, to this land they were bound,
a place to work hard, to grow, and to play,
tilling the soil and seeding the ground,
putting down roots, on their land they would stay.
