Waiting for Warmth

Small Steps

by Gail Denham

Barefoot, I emerge
from the comfort of long
john winter and tiptoe across
frosty deck to greet a plump
yellow crocus, risen/burst
up through crusty snow, knowing
both of us hold our breath for warmth.
I want to run, joyous, in tickley grass,
but content now to store electric
blankets, I spread out seed catalogs,
and remember sun color.

Poem for Spring writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem for spring. You can not use the words: flower, buds, blossoms, rain, new.

I've photographed beautiful yellow crocus bursting up through the snow, ready for Spring - whenever spring comes around. This was used in my 3rd poetry chapbook, "Dancin' Thru' Puddles".
