Next Step, Life??? Puhleeaze...

I bite my tongue and walk on past
Wouldn’t want to make a scene...
But, I’m here again, beside myself,
Knowing some of you will find me mean
 
But parents carrying students’ books?
AND their heavy backpacks up the stairs?
When did parents become ‘the help’
To those that simply are their heirs?
 
Football and baseball players waltz in,
Moms trailing behind carrying their stuff...
What happened to the independent ones?
Our females self-sufficient, our males tough?
 
I get emails regarding absences
From the parents, not Juniors and Seniors...
Will these parents be their assistants for life?
You’d think so given students’ demeanors...
 
And were you aware that a student’s grade
Should strongly reflect how hard they have tried?
Demonstrated knowledge be damned, you see,
For there’s also the matter of parent pride...
 
Please know, they’ve invested a lot of time,
Of genes and their narcissistic pursuit,
To produce the bright student before you
With pedigree and prized bio to boot!
 
No wonder students feel they’re entitled,
No wonder ‘me-centric’ is their worldview...
I ask you, flat out, if this were your life,
Wouldn’t you feel that the world owed you, too?

Thank you for listening to my rant today... I'm quite sure it's not perfect in meter or any other aspect, but I hope that at least my frustration with 'things' is there. To quote my brilliant students: "I literally just sat down and scribbled this on break today!" Suffice to say, it is the end of the year -- counting down to final exams in just over two weeks.

Don't look for some 'tough cookies' in the future, folks! And the 'tough' that you do find will simply be 'their way or the highway' tough.... Not independent so much as authoritarian.

Summer's coming, right? Right?
