Men and women who put their lives at risk

Service over Self

by HarryT

Every morning, kissed his daughter
And wife, said a smiling, "see you tonight"
Went off to the job he so dearly loved
Protecting drivers from potential slaughter

Serve and protect was his heartfelt mission
Saw a woman motorist waving in distress
He turned on his red and blue flashers
Pulled behind into a protective position

He carefully stepped from his squad car
Drivers whizzed by, none slowing down
He calmed the lady said he would help
She pointed and handed him her jack bar

He knelt to remove a stubborn lug nut
It fell to the pavement and rolled away
He stretched and stepped back to retrieve
It had tumbled into a muddy roadside rut

Distracted driver speeding, never yielding
Hit him, dragged him more than 200 feet…
Grieving police officers lined the church aisles
Their prayers for his family sincerely appealing

Officers followed in a long line to the cemetery
Where his heartbroken wife and crying daughter
Placed roses, kiss his coffin and said goodbye
Who are these people who choose a life so scary?
