Memories of War

by dragonpoet

When a young man or woman shows true heart
And courage to say "Yes"
To war and do their patriotic part,
Do they verily guess
How they'll react to what they'll do or see;
How their deaths might just affect you or me?

Can they live with the memory of blood
They spill or how they hurt
From what they've done or the sudden flood
Of muddy red dirt
In what's left of their once innocent minds?
After being returned home will they find

That the love of family and close friends
Help bodies and brains heal?
Will their memories ever reach the ends
Of their mind's movie reel
and find a way to live again in peace
Until the threat of war's return will cease?
