The Candle

One candle lit the corner of the room.
A single flame so weak
could not hold forth against the dark and gloom.
that cloaked this place so bleak.
I carried it to light my way about
this house that once was beautiful, no doubt.

This tallow tube sat seemingly in wait
as if it knew someday
someone would come and use it to abate
the edge where shadows play.
I wonder, had it lingered long, believed
sometime it would be happily retrieved?

My exploration done in this abode,
the search gave not a trace
nor hint of living here that showed.
The taper’s back in place
where I had found it on the kitchen shelf.
It looked so lonely there all by itself.
