Thouhts of the brave men who fought at Iwo Jima

Thoughts at a Memorial

by HarryT

In Washington there stands the Iwo Jima Memorial
Craved testament to heroic men for time immemorial
Six bronzed men strain to lift Old Glory
Immortalizing Marines and their fabled story

Men who disembarked into hails of bullets and projectiles
Marines facing looming death, a situation that logic defiles
Men who left behind sweethearts, children and wives
Sacrificing the best years of their tender young lives

Who were these men willing to charge into hell?
What kind of courage must in these men dwell?
Each man knowing he could enter the eternal season
Yet he fights on disregarding safety and human reason

High on Suribachi six men planted a symbol of hope
Marines rose to charge up the atoll’s dangerous slope
Those who fought on Iwo performed heroic deeds
They were the gallant men that only freedom breeds
