The Disease

by Helena Frances

Fear, anger and resentment
choked out hope, hugs, and conversation.

Teenage experimentation turned into
full-fledged addiction
bringing the family,
formerly thought to be ideal,
to its knees.

Attempts to "fix" failed and failed again.

When finally she realigned herself with her Higher Power
she entrusted Him with her daughter
and learned to live her life
regardless of how others lived theirs.

Eventually her daughter, after much hard work
and the power of the Twelve Steps
had a spiritual awakening
and reentered the world of sobriety.

The darkness that accompanied the disease of addiction
offered choices of continued anger, rejection and judgment,
or the opportunity of acceptance, self-care
and the hope for better tomorrows
one day at a time..
