A Dog's Prayer

by Roxanna Andrews

Dear Lord,

I'm just a little dog,
But I'm worried about this thing called 'Smog'.

Is it a monster or a disease?
It makes my human cough and sneeze.

She said, "Harley, we can't go out today,
The weatherman says we must stay
In the house where the air is clear."

But I don't like being in here!

It isn't any fun at all,
To be where lizards do not crawl,

And squirrels don't run away from me,
To play hide-and-seek up a tree.

I can't chase a ball, or dig for bones.
No barking at scary pine cones.

I can't chase butterflies or bees,
Imaginary pirates or sneaky thieves!

I'm not happy, can't you see?
Oh, please Lord, won't you rescue me,

From the monster whose name is Smog?
If you do, I'll always be a real good dog.

Amen

We were to write a poem of an animal praying. I thought my brother's little dog might pray like this. Smog sounds like a very scary thing, which it is, so she would be very worried.
