A Relic

by damommy

Beneath the ancient chestnut bough
there stands a relic lost to time,
an old forgotten, rusty plow
was left to weather, dirt, and grime.

There stands a relic lost to time.
Once powered by a mighty ox
was left to weather, dirt, and grime
beside a field of green cornstalks.

Once powered by a mighty ox,
it’s now rejected and disposed.
Beside a field of green cornstalks,
it sits ignored and gargoyle-posed.

So, now rejected and disposed,
it rests among the thistle weed,
and sits ignored and gargoyle-posed,
a symbol of a dying breed.

It rests among the thistle weed,
an old forgotten, rusty plow,
a symbol of a dying breed,
beneath the ancient chestnut bough.

The pantoum consists of a series of quatrains rhyming ABAB in which the second and fourth lines of a quatrain recur as the first and third lines in the succeeding quatrain; each quatrain introduces a new second rhyme as BCBC, CDCD. The first line of the series recurs as the last line of the closing quatrain, and third line of the poem recurs as the second line of the closing quatrain, rhyming ZAZA.
