A Love that Endures

by Y. M. Roger

From the instant that flutter invades your awareness,
Life as you know it is through –
Experience...no longer a zero sum gain,
  Perception of everything’s skewed

Right there, in that moment, as new life makes itself known,
Love like no other takes hold –
The paradigm shift...your grasp of a new 'real'
  Results in life changes untold

But nothing you face – not those diapers or car seats,
Big clothes or change of workplace –
Can prepare you for the feel of that life in your arms,
  Your heart memorizing that face

An introduction entwined with innocent grace,
  A love heartbreakingly pure –
And the anchor it firmly cements to your heart
Gives strength so that love can endure

For as it is with all of life’s meaningful journeys
The outset’s the simplest, you know –
Now comes the tango of standing firm, stepping back,
Of loving while letting them go

Oh, God, how they’ll try you, force you to dig deep
For patience and endless prayer –
They’ll bring laughter and mirth, a unique sense of pride
Cuz hey! That’s your baby out there!

But the child disappears, a simple ‘NO’ won’t suffice –
In your house, there’s this young upstart…
Then blink! And that upstart's a strong-willed adult
Who’s destined to break your heart

No longer under your roof twenty-four seven,
The person they are will appear –
They’ll amaze you, stun you, make you question yourself -
You’ll shed more than just a few tears

In so many ways, they’re your crowning achievement
If not your greatest of joys –
There’s no doubting the love that began with a flutter
Covers men that once were your boys.

Okay, folks, this is about as mushy as I get...but my boys (my young men!) are the one thing that do it to me! :) :) Moms (and Dads!) I tried to keep it 'gender neutral' until the end... so insert your own ending there for your girls! :) :)

And the pic is 'a bit fuzzy' as it is an actual photograph (do those exist anymore? LOL!) of my three boys a long time ago...makes me feel old just typing that! Please let me know if it is sideways for you as it appears correctly on my screen. :)

Thank you for reading today -- hope you enjoyed! :) Yvette
