150 Words - A family tries to enjoy some birthday cake

Happy Birthday!

by KELLYLMILLER

Our family doesn't fuss over the "Happy Birthday" song. We sing it quickly and joyfully, with showmanship saved only for the finale, "And many more!"

Which is why we were stunned when the brother of newly-minted five-year old Joshua went missing while we gathered around the patio for cake and candles. Connor, almost two, was gone. Joshua noticed it first as he gloated over dessert. Mom tried not to panic, but the family sprayed in all directions, especially towards the street, to intercept him. Twenty minutes passed before Aunt Debra discovered him in the bathroom, trying his best to use the toilet like a big boy.

Connor and Debra emerged from the house with wet clothes in a tight embrace to an audience of smiles and raised eyebrows. Connor ran to Mom, but changed course, and our smiles turned to winces as his wet hands pushed through that birthday cake.
