A Quiet Night at Casey's Bar

by Catmusings

"Quiet night tonight, isn't it?" a woman said from a few bar stools away where Darlene nursed her gin and tonic.

"Well, it is a Monday. Casey's is never very busy on Mondays. Not that I'm here every Monday, that is," Darlene stammered. She munched on her olive without looking up. She wasn't sure what she was doing here but her apartment was too dreary to contemplate now that her boyfriend Martin had moved out.

"Are you okay?" asked the woman. "You seem pretty down."

"I'm fine," Darlene replied looking towards the woman with the sleek physique, almond eyes, smooth long black hair and olive skin. She was in great shape. Martin had always tried to get Darlene to go jogging with him but she hated it.

"I'm Paula," the woman said coming to sit next to her.

"I'm Darlene," Darlene said with a self conscious shrug.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

"Sure," Darlene leaned in closer. There was nothing she liked better than sharing a secret. Whether she would keep it was another story.

"I'm really a cat."

Darlene looked at Paula in disbelief.

"Oh, come on. Are you pulling my leg?" Darlene said.

"I get that reaction a lot," Paula said. "Seriously. I can turn into a black cat."

"I don't believe you. You're crazy!"

"All I want is us to be friends," Paula said with a frown. "I can tell you're lonely. I'll be your friend."

"I'd better go now," Darlene said putting on her coat and grabbing her purse. "Bye, Paula."

Darlene couldn't get out of the bar fast enough. That woman gave her the creeps.

She ran to her little beat up Honda Civic, jumped in and zoomed off with her foot to the floor.

Relieved to be home, she kicked off her shoes and fell into an exhausted heap on the over stuffed faded couch she had inherited from her mother.

A sound came from the other room and Darlene tensed. Someone was in the apartment.

She crept towards the entrance to her bedroom and peeked in.

There lying on her queen sized bed was a sleek black cat purring at her.
