Way to go, girl.

Ruby

by Heather Knight

Ruby dreamt a big dream. She would go to school.

What?

Doesn't seem so big?

Let me tell you more...

Ruby was born in Mississippi in 1954.

And she was black...

‘Ah!’ You say. Now you understand.

Ruby's big dream became true. But not without a few huge hurdles.

Strong, burly U.S. Marshals escorted her to class. However, their protection was not enough. Tomatoes rained on her. Tears made her eyes sting. She walked proudly, but she felt like quitting.

Now Ruby is grown up and she is glad she fought the fight. Thanks to her, black children over America can walk to school unafraid.

Quite an achievement for a tiny little girl.
