Why I Blew Up My Mailbox

by Rachelle Allen

Junk Mail - poem in any style. Contest Winner
What can a Fussy-Mussy do
when Junk Mail turns prolific?
Bag it?
Burn it?
Throw it out?
(It's not Blue Box specific!)

Unless it's dealt with daily,
it can overtake one's soul.
(God help you if you're gone a week;
That's junk mail's Big Black Hole.)

Catalogs and new car deals,
coupon books and more.
But the one that finally did me in?
"Happy Birthday! -The Scooter Store."

In this region, "Blue Box" is the term for a recycling container that is left, weekly, at the curb for collection. The municipality here is very specific about what can and cannot be recycled, and many a junk mailing of ours has been rejected by them on Garbage Day.
