An alphabet of butterflies

Small Wonders

by BermyBye50

On wings in-flight across the skies
tiny patterns reveal a beautiful array
the alphabet on wings of butterflies,

For each butterfly magically brings
midst a myriad of colored scales
a letter hidden on its delicate wings.

Their secret is often hidden from sight
on velvety wings of vivid stardust
is one of nature's marveled delights,

Resplendent colors with glossy lines
of transparent pearly golden eyespots
in rows of circular rainbow designs.

Playful invisible letters and numbers
dancing midst light feather-like scales
shimmer on wings of infinite wonder,

Beautifully gilded like a jeweled crown
of kaleidoscopic radiant colored light
more exquisite than a wedding gown.

From flower to flower with simple ease
soaring in lightsome soundless flutter
each one lifted up by a gentle breeze,

Like floating flowery petals in flight
tumbling all day above on the breeze
tiny nymphs rising to the highest height.

Innocent and yet completely unaware
they have present on their sparkly wings
an alphanumeric gift beyond compare,

For each butterfly is a tiny string-less kite
awakening in our hearts a magical key
to nature's inexplicable wondrous delight.

Each morning, butterfly wings unfold
like little floating floral petal sprites
dressed in scarlet, blue, orange, and gold,

So simple is their scintillating majesty
crisscrossing among the vibrant flowers
of nature's resplendent glorious tapestry.

Each individual butterfly in secret brings
an alphabetical celebration ever aflutter
letters distinctively hidden on its wings,

Like tiny heavenly angels, they descend
wonder's merry messengers of happiness
imprinted by Mother Nature's own hand.

The image above was made by the Norwegian nature photographer, author, and lecturer Kjell Bloch Sandved. He photographed butterflies in over 30 countries and found all the letters of the English alphabet as well as the numbers 0-9 in patterns in the wings of live butterflies and moths.
