Dog Sled Racing

Mushers are people who enter the dog sled races in competition with others in cross country. Mushers learn commands about racing. A smart musher will train on all conditions throughout the year. They will learn to handle all kinds of conditions including low snow conditions the sled racers learn to adapt to this trend of low snow and warmer climates.
To be a musher,you need among other things to wear warm clothing. A rookie is a first time musher who is running the race for the first time or who has never competed in a race before. The word hike is used nowadays instead of saying mush.
The race is run cross country - long distance and is usually run in March from Anchorage to Nome Alaska in the United Stat,Es. Mushers of Alaska and a team of 16 dogs of which 5 must be in the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 8 to 15 days or more.
Veterinarians are on hand to see to the care of the dogs, also to see the dogs that are left behind on a trip get back safely to their owners after the race. It is a very grueling life for mushers having to train their dogs as well as finding the right help to train their dogs preparing them for the race. It takes a lot of dedication and loyalty to take on this type of life. So much can happen and so much depends on the team for everyone concerned.
