Old Slippery Sam

by Mimi Linny

The largest fish in Frederick’s Creek
Was said to be so grand,
That people came from miles and miles
To see if they could land
The fish they called Old Slippery Sam,
But try as though they may,
To make the snatch
And trap the catch,
Old Slippery got away.

Now Slippery Sam was cunning
And as crafty as could be.
He’d lie in wait, then steal the bait
Then down the stream swam he.
You could almost hear him laughing
As Sam leapt and wagged his fin...
To let the maddened angler know
He had better try again!

Yet one old cranky fisherman
Beneath the full moon’s shine
Above the bridge on Carroll Creek
Kept casting off his line.
The story goes he swore he’d stay
And never leave that spot,
If even o’er a hundred years…

‘Til Slippery Sam he’d caught!

The days, the weeks, the months did pass
A hundred years now gone,
Reflections off of Carroll Creek
Beneath the bridge hang on.
And the ghost of that old Fisherman,
Still casting for his prey,
Midst phantom laughs from Slippery Sam
Still haunts the Creek today!
