A Second Chance At Love

by moonsunrise

I watched in the window as he moved in across the street from me
I was only fifteen and about to enter Holy Name High in the fall
His figure was tall, his hair and eyes were dark brown and dazzling
I wanted so much for him to notice me so he would give me a call
And he did

What seemed to be only a puppy love grew into much more over time
Just seeing his dark brown eyes and warm smile would make me quiver
He became my morning, my day and night and meant the world to me
I never knew that his heart would turn cold causing my heart to shiver
But it did

One day, to my surprise my life turned into one of those sad love stories
The man I loved heart and soul admitted to me that he was an alcoholic
He informed me that he had to leave me otherwise he would destroy me
From that moment on everything in my life changed; I became neurotic
And I died

Two years passed, pain continued in spite of the love of two great children
I was a fraction of the person I used to be; just going through the motions
A pure mask of deceit veiled my face as I walked around with a bogus smile
I truly tried to be happy but was overcome with countless painful emotions
And I cried

Time passed and the support of family and friends helped my heart to heal
Then one Sunday I was fortunate enough to meet a sweet man named Fran
A handsome, gentle guy who asked if I would like for him to call me one day
Though I was a bit apprehensive I said yes as I felt comfortable with this man
And he did

We began to date gradually as he had also gone through a tough break-up
Spending time together proved to be enjoyable as we had a lot in common
Similar backgrounds and ideology, this almost seemed too good to be true
Was this a forever plan or would our relationship one day become foreign
And I wondered

Months passed into years and we grew more deeply in love with each day
He became the one constant in my life and re-instilled my faith in true love
We have been married thirty four years and have eight amazing children
Twenty-one grand-children, four great and are truly blessed from above
And I live
