Early Spring, Late Bloom

by dovemarie

In my early spring
Of childhood and adolescence
I thought about doing everything -
Curtain rising on my acting,
Accompanist with my singing,
Someday wearing a wedding ring

The years went by
I started to cry
No job, no career
Pain with every tear

In late bloom,
I sat imagining in my bedroom
Days were filled with gloom

But I returned to early spring
Now in recitals I sing
I took courses in acting

I was just a flower in late bloom
I studied college education
Empty years were a somber vacation
Now I am a garden
Which no ill fortune can ever consume

Thinking of the years of my childhood when I won awards for piano and spelling, then landed in an institution in early adolescence, years of unemployment, retarded workshops, living in two nursing homes, psychological abuse, then I started going to college, and I have recently sung in recitals (2017 and 2018), published poetry (2013 - 2016, 2018), my mother called me "a late bloomer," which inspired this poem.
