This work has reached the exceptional level

by Marty K

When evening chills gnawed at tiny feet
You swaddled us in warmth and love
Kept us safe and fed us Farley's Rusks
While singing a sweet lullaby
In soft lilting tones
Lyrics, known only to you.

Twelve times
The ritual never faltered
Selfless in love lasting a lifetime
Strong in unfettered faith
You saw us through
School, work, relationships, hopes and dreams
Sometimes realised, sometimes shattered
While you stood sentinel
Forever the eternal matriarch

And not easy
Your own life mired in tragedy and disconnect
"I do not begrudge her to God," you once wrote
Like we don't begrudge you -- lie
That gaping wound of absence
Bleeding painful memories
Never to be stitched or staunched

Eleven now
Each with their own story
Your final days, a muddled mind
Trying to master an elusive past
Moving moments meandering
In nuanced shades of years gone by.

You left us on a summer's day
Interred on your birthday
The only day we never could forget
The only day we always will remember
