The Giggling Runaway

by Elizabeth Grey

A little girl
in pink footie pajamas
shuffles along
in the snow
with her arm around
her ABC blanket
curled up
like a snail.
Her cupped hands
hide her lips;
she giggles
in secret serenity.
Her laughing eyes light up
like the angel after whom
she is named.
She pulls up the corner
of the blanket,
looks behind her,
Her mama's gate is
still open,
but she grins with
her mischievous mouth
and continues walking
singing in her language
with her luggage.
