The Old Digger

by Aussie

I met Morrie on the street one day
We talked about his Singapore fight
Morrie was bitter and had his say
Rescued soldiers From Changi blight

Mad as a hatter he told his tale
Intelligent and wise old ship's mate
Into Singapore to free each male
Starving, beaten, some dead; too late

Asked that old digger did he go back
He told me he had to return to see
Japanese prisoners with rope slack
Hang 'em high, bastards could never flee

Dear old Morrie did his best
Freed our soldiers from Changi hell
Tiny Morrie, gentleman in tie and vest
A true-blue Aussie - loved Australia so well

Australian soldiers were imprisoned by the Japanese in Singapore WW11 - Morrie was a gunner on a destroyer (ship) that sailed into Singapore; to rescue our soldiers left to rot in Changi Prison. He is a funny man, sense of humor, still bitter over the war. He actually helped build the Australian chapel inside the walls of Changi Prison. I was amazed at his stamina at ninety-two, cooks, washes and shops for himself in a country town called Childers in Queensland. I visited Singapore myself, stood inside the chapel that he helped to build. What an honor to meet Maurie.
