A happy ending

Ugly Ulrika

by Heather Knight

Her mother said
She would die unwed.

Unlike her sisters,
She had no beauty.

Her nose was hooked,
Her hair was lanky,
Her feet too big,
Her face warty.

But as often happens,
Fate surprised them all.

One day a prince,
Rode into their village.
His steed was white,
His clothes of gold.

When she saw him,
she said hello.
He was smitten,
Her voice was soft.

He was not worried,
By the way she looked,
When he was little,
A horrid fire,
His eyes forever closed.

After a short courtship,
There was a wedding.
Our ugly duckling
Became a princess.

Her sisters watched,
Envy coming out
Of all their pores.
