'Hands off'

by Chrissy710

'Hands Off'

'Hands off' our Australia day
Please leave it well alone,
This is the day we celebrate"
A country we call home.

Generations born and bred
Have carved out a good life,
And yes, we must all recognize
We're not without some strife.

Perhaps if we could come again
With knowledge and insight,
'Invasion' may not be the word
Because we'd get it right.

But history books will never change
Those early landing days,
The fact remains today we all
Embrace our Aussie ways.

We live in peace with freedom ours
To roam across our land,
And to those folk who come and stay
Extend a welcome hand.

So, on the twenty sixth this year
Be proud and celebrate,
Fly your flags, set barbeques
Greet with a G'day mate.

Change not the date, leave it be
This one day of the year,
For generations still to come
Must learn why we are here.

Today Saturday 26th January is Australia day here in the Southern Hemisphere

Australia day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on January 26th. It marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the first fleet of British ships at Port Jackson New South wales, and the raising of the flag of great Britian at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip.

In present day Australian celebrations reflect the diverse societies and landscape of the nation and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian History. Official Community awards, citizen ceremonies welcome New members of the Australian community.

The date of Australia day has also been marked by indigenous Australians and those sympathetic to their cause mourning what is seen as the invasion of their land by Europeans and protesting its celebration as a national holiday.
These groups sometimes refer to the 26th January as invasion day and advocate the date be changed.

However many also believe it is the day of survival too. Despite colonization Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people survived. Their culture survives.
By reminding people that regardless of how e celebrate what it means to be Australian we we are still here. we are still relevant and continue to maintain the worlds oldest living culture

A recent poll conducted in 2019 to see if Australians wanted to change the date, revealed that
75% against change
10% undecided
15% for change

I have written this poem 'Hand Off' to remind people that despite all the controversy Australia day is a day for ALL Australians to celebrate our great land and black or white we all share the wonderful resources and benefits afforded to us here. We are the "Lucky Country" Enjoy this day with pride and thanks to our for-fathers no matter what race.. We are all Australians
