Bobby Joe Returns
by country ranch writer
Background Bobby Joe returns home for her grandpa's funeral only to learn he may have murdered by rustlers. |
Grandpa was buried in the family cemetery plot down by the river beside grandma, and mom and dad. Jessie was all Bobby Joe had left now. It was a beautiful day and it seemed like all the wildlife came to say their goodbyes.
Having Jake there with her to lean on seemed so right. Saying goodbye to her grandpa was the hardest thing she ever had to do in her life. She had wanted to come back before now but her touring schedule didn't give her any time off this year.
Walking Bobby Joe back to the house Jake was relieved now she'd be all right. Seeing her safely inside, he went to the bunkhouse to sleep.
Who would want to murder her grandpa? Rumors of murder started circulating. Here in a small town word spreads like wildfire.
Jake had told her, "The sheriff and I agreed that we shouldn't jump to conclusions." Jake also reminded himself he would help her find his killer.
Making her way to her room Bobby Joe changed into her nightclothes and went back down to make herself some hot chocolate before going to bed. Picking up her cup of hot chocolate she went into her grandpa's den. Setting her drink down on the desk, she sat in his chair. She felt like he was already there waiting, for her his presence was very strong in the room. She began cried softly saying, "I'm sorry grandpa," she said out loud, "I feel I let you down. I will get myself together and make you proud of me. I will find out what happened to you and why someone would want to kill you!"
Upon waking Bobby Joe discovered she had fallen asleep in her grandpa's overstuffed chair. As she was heading upstairs, she heard someone at the front door. Jake knocked on the door, then walked in hollering," anybody up?" He headed toward the kitchen and put the coffee on.
Bobby Joe hollered," Be right down!" hurrying up the stairs to get dressed. She was back down in just a flash carrying her boots in her hand as she entered the kitchen.
Grabbing the coffee he'd poured, she took a drink , sputtering saying damn that's hot! " How did you know I needed this?" She asked. Sipping it more slowly
I figured you could use it first thing to get you a stirring he smiled.
"Let's head out soon as you get your boots on that is," he teased her. He noticed she looked like she hadn't slept well last night.
" Nice day for a ride," Jake said, looking up towards the sky as they headed out of the house towards the barn.
Bobby Joe put her hair in a pony tail, donned her hat saying," Let's ride cowboy!" She swings her self up in the saddle riding ahead of him as they headed out.
Jake glanced at her as they were riding along smiling he says, "I'm glad you are home!"
He then says, "You look like you could tackle the world he says teasing her"
"I wonder about that sometimes," she replied.
"Yeah, I can see how you would think with just losing your grandpa like that so sudden like," Jake said.
" I was closer to grandpa than Jessie was, so I don't mind telling you it's been rough! A living hell matter of fact." Bobby Joe relayed to him. Suddenly it all seemed more than she could handle. She had another anxiety attack, fighting it off as best she could in front of Jake. She thought to herself," will I ever get over them."
Jake sensed her discomfort, as she reached her hand up touching her forehead, He could see the tension in her face. He wished he could relive the tension she was feeling.
She closed her eyes for a minute and breathed in the cool and crisp air her headache and tension seemed to disappear.
Returning to the ranch, she helped him put the horses away, and they called it a night agreeing to meet again the next day.
Wondering what she has got herself into, she grabbed her guitar, pad, and headed out to the front porch to unwind. Her grandpa had always had control and liked by all. His ranch was his pride and joy, and she hoped she could continue to do a good a job as he had.
She could feel her grandpa sitting there in his rocking chair listening to her play her music tapping his foot to the beat. She played his favorite song she had written him and recorded on her album. "Grandpa Loves Me."
Jessie had left to go back to his place shortly after the funeral, so everything was left up to her.
He said, "If she needed him just give him a call,"
He had to get back to his ranch as he was expecting more Mustangs to be brought in. Jessie was like her grandpa they were trying to keep the mustangs safe from the rustlers.
She was playing her guitar out in the rocking chair when she heard loud voices coming from the pasture. Looking out towards the barn she saw Jake giving orders to some hands.
Spying her watching home he waved as he said something to the hands, they all turned nodding to her, then went on their way to tackle their chores.
Later that afternoon she heard him talking softly to something over at the corral, wandering to the end of the porch to get a better view. He was talking to his horse and patting him as he was rubbing him down. She thought of her grandpa he knew everything there was to know about the woods, ranching, and horses. She sure missed her grandpa and growing up around the ranch. He had bought her- her first guitar.
Upon waking, she discovered the air was crisp and clear. The light was streaming in the window and the birds outside were already up, and kicking up a fuss, chirping their heads off. Donning her jeans and throwing a sweater over the flannel shirt, she headed out to the corral.
"Good Morning!" Bobby Joe said as she entered the bunkhouse. Everyone scattered every which way to get themselves covered. "Oh!" She said," I am sorry guys I should have knocked first." Turning her face to the door, she stepped outside blushing.
Jake came around the side of the bunkhouse wondering what all the fuss was about. Bobby Joe stopped in her tracks when she spied him. "I thought you were in the bunkhouse," her face was still red from blushing.
And about that time the door opened and a lot of embarrassed cowboys came tumbling out. Jake laughed, and when he saw the embarrassed look on everyone's face, he stopped.
"Well, that's one way of starting the day off with a bang one of the guys chimed in good-naturedly." Then said."Sorry, ma'am, you caught us unawares."
