When the Dust Clears

by Y. M. Roger

Plodding along, I soon found myself lost,
Through pained labyrinths, my thoughts they were tossed
What should I have said?
Which tightrope have tread?
Could I have misread?
When the dust clears, would there be a cost?

Then abruptly and quite without warning,
The setting changed from ev’ning to morning -
Not making a sound
I stopped and turned ‘round
And suddenly found
The air filled with tiny sprites performing...

They swooped and dived both alone and in pairs,
Their movements painting bright colorful airs -
‘Til those trails combined
And challenged the mind
To feel the sublime
And forget all of its previous cares.

A musical chorus soon joined the fray,
I heard voices chime and instruments play
The din seemed to still
‘Cross my skin, a chill,
Then my heart did thrill
At the sight of his magnificent face...

So handsome and lithe, he held out his hand,
Without a doubt, I was at his command
His breath in my ear
As he held me near
Our own little sphere
And the fae waltz that he lead was just grand!

We danced through the glen, the sprites keeping pace,
Then up a rainbow in his sure embrace.
“Right here, Treasured One,
When you feel undone
And life weighs a ton -
Together, your distresses we’ll erase.”

As the music waned, I hummed and I smiled,
Feet touching down, I was wholly beguiled.
“Remember,” he said,
“no worries or dread -
You come here instead.”
His kiss of farewell, amazingly mild.

My eyes then opened to ev’ning once more -
Not plodding, I strode, new roads to explore -
My questions cast out
Along with the doubt
Only calm throughout
The new freedom I’d found let my heart soar...

I know my fae prince will come once again -
Sprites may be gone, but their colors remain...
Their wonderful hues
From yellows to blues
Paint life and my muse…
And when that dust clears? Blue skies remain!
