Does this mirror make me look old...?

Is It the Mirror or the Eyes?

by Y. M. Roger

Does this mirror make me look old?
 Perhaps I'll use another one?
Is it glass that tells the story?
Or the eyes that interpret it?

You see, I’ve gazed into this mirror
with eyes of sadness and discontent
I can follow miniscule crows’ feet
creeping slowly outward from my eyes
They dance along my graying hairline
down my cheek just past my ears
And there unfurl thin ribbons of age
to stream down along my chin and neck…

But, that same mirror will catch my eye
on a day of peace and happiness
And those crows are but distant mem’ry,
for only brill’ant hazel shines back
What once seemed to be dreaded wrinkles
simply burst forth as laugh lines of mirth
My smile, though no longer borne of youth,
outshines any gray ribbons in there…

So, then, I ask you once again,
does this mirror make me look old?

~ bright eyes with crows’ feet ~

~ bright smile with laugh lines ~

~ hidden youth shining through age ~

Is it truly glass that tells the story?
Hmmm...I believe, I’ll let your eyes decide
