How Not To Write A Poem

by Heather Knight

When you want to learn to rhyme,
But you don't have the time.

What do you do then?
You go out to the glen,
Find a golden wren
And sharpen your pen.

When shiny words betray you,
Even if you try that metaphor to woo.

What do you do then?
You try again and again,
Not one time but ten.
You even practice zen.

When you want to give up,
And eat a death cup.

How can you go on?
Work from early dawn,
Do suppress that yawn
Use words like hadron.

When you finally realize,
You are poetry's demise.

How can you go on?
Get a silver crayon,
Look at the star you've drawn
And make yourself a cape of chiffon.

You might still be a lost cause,
But at least you'll be wearing gauze.
